CHAPTER SEVEN

To David’s great relief, it looked like the weather was holding.

It had snowed a bit overnight, but that seemed to have stopped entirely. The skies were mostly clear overhead as they walked along the road, moving past the abandoned warehouse where Evie was going to come not long in the future with a small team.

He and Cait and Jennifer walked down the middle of the road, keeping an eye out for any hostiles, and they all seemed to be in high spirits. Even Jennifer, although he imagined it was hard to be in low spirits after having sex with three different people, all of whom worked hard to make you orgasm, which they all had managed to get at least a single orgasm out of her. She was exceptionally grateful for that.

“Do you have any idea what we might expect at the mountain?” Jennifer asked as they made their approach to it.

“No,” Cait said after David shook his head. “No one I’ve known has really made much attempt to do this or come to this area. I don’t know what we might run into. Maybe we’ll get lucky and run into nothing at all.”

David snorted. “When has that ever been true?”

She laughed. “Yeah, that’s a fair point. Just wishful thinking on my part.”

He could actually see the radio tower now. It was maybe halfway up the mountain, and he thought he could see a trail leading up towards it. He had mixed feelings about this whole thing. On the one hand, it would be good to check this place out, because it might actually have some cool shit up there. This was a decently difficult to reach, out of the way place where someone might have gone out of their way to store stuff, then died or abandoned the area. Plus, there was sure to be a really cool view from up there.

On the other hand, it was probably going to be dangerous to get to. Between the trail which probably wasn’t all that stable to begin with, and had surely degraded over the decades, and any hostile creatures that might be in the area, or even hostile humans. That was always a possibility. On the whole, he was going to be very glad when they were walking back home to the campgrounds, ideally with the parts in hand.

“I assume we’re going to tackle the factory tomorrow, provided this doesn’t give us what we want?” Jennifer asked.

“Yes,” Cait replied.

“I think we’re going to want at least a bit of help there.”

“You think us, Evie, and Katya would be enough?” David asked.

“Probably,” Cait said uncertainly. “The problem is, I have no idea what the conditions there will be like, but it makes sense to err on the side of caution...” She growled suddenly. “Goddamnit, Ellie. We could really use her help about now.”

“Yeah...” Jennifer said sadly.

David felt her frustration, and Jennifer’s sadness. That blue-furred jag kept coming back to his mind again and again. He wondered if it would depress or frustrate her how much of an impact she had made on the people around her.
